What is minor surgery?

If a soft tissue mass has signs that it may be cancerous, a laboratory analyzes the sample for cancerous cells. In many cases, moles are rarely cancerous, but it can indicate cancer if they bleed, you notice changes in shape, color, or size, or they grow back in the same place after they have been removed. 

Depending on your lab results, your oncologist may arrange additional cancer treatments, such as cryotherapy (freezing treatment), chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or immunotherapy.

What does minor surgery involve?

Most patients don’t need a general anesthetic for minor surgery. Before your procedure, your provider numbs the treatment area with a local anesthetic, so you won’t feel any discomfort.

Then, they make small incisions to access the soft tissues or drain the mass. After removing all of the abnormal tissue and repairing any damage, they close your wound with sutures or surgical tape.

Minor surgeries involve tiny incisions, which can help reduce scarring and pain. In many cases, the scars will be so small that they won’t be noticeable when the skin fully heals.
